How to pressure wash your driveway?

If you’re the proud owner of a pressure washer, then it’s fair to say that you’re aware of the immense benefits they grant you. Notable for reducing cleaning time in half, pressure washers are a great tool for a thorough and total cleansing.

However, making use of the pressure washer can be a little daunting task. This can be credited to several factors, such as model buildup, instruction manuals, and portability. Keeping account of the bulk of these factors simultaneously can be a little tough.

So if you’re here and are planning to wash your driveway with your pressure washer, then you’re in the right place.

In this segment, we’ll highlight a series of steps that you can follow as is and then proceed to clean your driveway with ease. Before that, however, there are a few things that you should be aware of!

Why use a pressure washer?

The main reason why pressure washers are encouraged for tasks such as these is, as the name implies, the high pressure that they function at.

The high pressure solvent propulsion ensures that any types of dust and dirt molecules embedded on the surface being cleaned are penetrated completely and thoroughly. In many cases, a thorough cleaning is absolutely essential to make sure that the place is actually clean.

Another feature that pressure washers employ, that comes in handy from time to time, is that they are portable and often contain all the components required for effective cleaning.

Traditional cleaning might require you to carry a multitude of things from place to place, with extra attention given to not dropping things.

With a pressure washer, however, you’ll save yourself from the trouble. Everything worth carrying is already included in the frame buildup.

Now that we’ve established the importance of pressure washers, let’s proceed to how to make good use of them!

Cleaning the driveway

There are many things that can ruin a perfectly well driveway. Things such as oil, salt, gas, and grease are often the biggest culprits when it comes to ruining a driveway.

Other factors that might contribute to this compilation are the weather, bird droppings, excessive dust, and virtually anything that can be responsible for making something look bad.

Hence, pressure washing the driveway, in lieu of all the factors mentioned, needs a little finesse.

The process requires a little bit of preparation and is best executed when followed with a particular pattern and rigor.

Tried and tested the bulk of the methods out there, the upcoming steps are those that we would exclusively recommend you follow!

Initial preparation

The first step that you have to undertake is cleaning the driveway with a push broom.

The main reason for doing that is to remove any type of dust or dirt particles that are huddled together. Generally speaking, a washer can get rid of them with ease.

However, we advise using a push broom over a washer to save you the hassle of dealing with mud.

When done with the broom work, inspect the area that you’ll be washing. Locate the corners that meet the boundary of your home. If you feel that the debris might damage the lining, cover it up with tarp.

Degrease the driveway

The next step we would suggest is degreasing the driveway.

The main purpose of a degreaser is that it can break up hard and tough stains on the driveway.

One of the main components of degreasers is enzymes that naturally breakdown such stains.

To elucidate my point, and in conjunction with the principle above, this will make cleaning so much easier.

Some pressure washers come with an additional tool. If not, you can use a bush broom for the job.

Prepare the washer!

After you’ve done the former, it’s time to get the big guns out. The bulk of this process calls for you to be familiar with the working mechanisms of your pressure washer.

Generally speaking, we highly advise that you acquaint yourself with how the model operates. A good instruction manual will come in handy for the job.

Once done, then proceed to attach the right tip and the spray wand. We won’t specify on the details here since different models have different setups.

Clean the concrete with detergent

After ample preparation, it’s time to take safety precautions. Always ensure rubber boots, rubber gloves, and eyewear. This is to make sure that you don’t get any detergent or debris on you. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Start using the pressure washer at the steepest end so that the water flows downwards.

When cleaning, also ensure that you overlap each stroke for maximal efficiency.

Get rinsing

Now that you’ve used the detergent on the driveway, it’s time to shift to the water-y bit.

Switch to a high pressure wand tip and utilize the rinse mode setting on your washer.

When done, you have to repeat the same pattern that you used for applying the detergent.

Overlaps and stationary application (applying pressure at the same region for a period of time) is recommended if you feel that a particular stain isn’t coming off.

Repeat this process till you’re certain that all the detergent has been swept off, and that any visible stains are dealt with.

Seal the concrete

At this stage, you’re virtually done with the cleanup process. However, by utilizing this kicker, you’ll be thanking yourself down the road.

Once done with the rinsing process, we highly recommend that you seal the driveway to prevent any sort of future stains or damage.

You can apply any concrete sealer you fancy. Make use of a paint roller and apply it evenly in all directions.

Once done, let the sealer dry off for 24 hours. In this span, it’s advised that you don’t use the driveway at all, lest you run the risk of damaging the sealer.

After the 24 hours have passed, you can say hello to your brand-new all-cleaned-up driveway!
